Vinyl: Crisp Edges and Personalization
Vinyl printing is plotter cutting of film with later transfer. Strengths: perfectly even letters, numbers, simple logos, and contour graphics. Matte, gloss, metallic, and reflective films are available. The method is excellent for kits where each player has a unique number and surname. Photos, soft gradients, and complex halftone art are not for vinyl. For team lists vinyl is almost always faster at personalization than any full-color alternative.
DTF: Any Colors and Illustrations
DTF transfers a finished full-color image as a whole. You can print photos, watercolor effects, fine detail, and unlimited colors without cutting each element. For brand illustrations and rich-graphic merch DTF is usually more convenient. On simple one-color numbers vinyl often looks sharper at the edge and is cheaper to prep. If the artwork has many midtones, even a "nearly flat" design usually goes to DTF without trying to cut film. Fix that in writing before paying for the run.

Back numbers and names — vinyl. A 1–2 color logo with crisp edges — often vinyl. Photo portrait, gradient print, complex illustration — DTF. Reflective elements for evening training — vinyl. A hybrid on the kit saves budget: keep expensive color for the emblem and make digits in film. Extra control at this step usually pays off with a calm handover.
Durability, Care, and Feel on Fabric
Both methods with correct press and care usually hold 40+ washes. Vinyl feels like film with a crisp edge; DTF — like a printed layer with a softer transition on complex art. Wash inside out at 30–40°C, no high drying heat. Do not stretch the number when putting the garment on — a common cause of vinyl corner peel. Wear and wash rules should ship with the kit — especially for back numbers. So build buffer into timing and file quality early.
Economics of Small and Mid Orders
A simple number or short lettering is often cheaper and faster in vinyl. Full-color A4–A3 on one or a few tees is DTF territory. On mid runs with the same color design we compare DTF and screen separately: vinyl is not a competitor there.
